Follow These Steps in Designing Your Court
STEP #1: IDENTIFY THE CONSTRAINTS
Typically space or budget are goiing to determine how much court yuou build. So start by measuring the area you want to use for your gamecourt. You might find you only have 20' between trees or 30 feet on the side of your house. Once you identify these dimensions, you'll have more direction in planning your court. If you have unlimited space, identify the amount you want to spend. You can always build your court in phases, starting with the base and a hoop, and adding accessories or tile later. STEP #2: WHAT GAMES DO YOU WANT TO PLAY ON YOUR COURT
Backyard game courts are great for basketball but they can also turn into space for volleyball, paddle tennis and pickleball, hockey, shuffleboard, 4-square, and almost any activity you can dream up. To create a multi-sport gamecourt, you'll probably want a rectangular shape that allows a center net. This is typically erected between the goal and a net post on the opposite side, or two net net posts. Lights can also serve as net posts. |
STEP #3: THINK ABOUT ACCESSORIES
Gamecourt accessories include hoops, lights, a multi-sport net, a rebounder, ball containment, and sports tile. If you're building your court in phases, as many families do, there are some tricks and tips to make the project easier later on. It might make sense to place conduit and wires for future lights, or leave space for ball containment or landscaping later on. |
STEP #4: ESTIMATING THE COST
We can try to estimate the total cost of the project, but there will be aspects unique to your job, like site work, access, and tree removal, that would be hard to approximate. Assuming you have a fairly flat piece of ground, with easy access, the following pricing estimates should help. A compacted base will probably cost between $.50-$1.00 per sf, depending on local materials and how much work you do yourself. A Concrete Pad may cost between $2-$8 per sf depending on concrete prices and finishing prices in your area. Sports tile for your court can cost between $3 and $6 per sf depending on the overall square footage, line configuration, and shipping costs. Goal systems and court lights can add $1200-$2500 each and ball containment can cost $35-$50 per linear foot. A rebounder will add approximately $1300. |
